Gordon was born on October 10, 1956 in Newport News, Virginia, and is a graduate of the New York University Film School. His first producer credit was the off-Broadway production of The Buddy System. Afterwards, he founded his own production company and started producing TV shows and feature films.
He is a former President of the Producers Guild of America, having served from 2010 to 2014. He then became the President Emeritus. In 2015, Gordon won the Norman Lear Award from the Guild for achievement in television. He is also a five-time Emmy Award nominee and two-time winner. Additionally, he won a Golden Globe Award for his work on Grey's Anatomy.
Gordon is currently executive-producing Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, its spin-offs Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Ray Donovan, and Quantico. In 2015, The Mark Gordon Company partnered with Entertainment One to create an independent television and film studio, which Gordon serves as its CEO. He was married to Karen Villeneuve from 1997 to 2003, and had two daughters with her. He is currently married to Sally Whitehill.
